This A-week in Room 2808…

CLASS NOTES: 

  • As a courtesy reminder, B-day classes will be registering for classes on Friday, March 16th (A-day classes on Monday, March 19th). Your GOLDEN TICKET must be completed with 8 courses and 4 alternates, and must have your signature and the signature of a parent/guardian. Please have this finished BEFORE COMING TO CLASS so that you aren’t the reason for slowing down the process for everyone else.

 

ENGLISH 3/AMERICAN LITERATURE

  • Focus on Poetry from the Civil War literature period
  • Students Become Teachers!  Small group work studying individual authors. You will present them to us next week.  Mark Twain, Kate Chopin, Herman Melville, Jack London, Stephen Crane.
    • Google Slide (day 1): list of everyone in your groupauthor’s biography (early life and influences, works published and any awards, professional influences. later in life); historical background from the time your author was living; brief info about the short story that your group read and you’ll be presenting.
    • Google Doc (day 2): ORIGINAL (from YOUR brains, not from online) 10 multiple choice (ABCD) test questions — and the answer key; 2 short answer questions (3-4 sentences) — and the answer key
    • Share your Slide and Doc with everyone in your group AND with Ms. Ausley (mrussell-ausley@wcpss.net)

 

AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE & COMPOSITION

  • All AP-released exam materials (MC tests and FRQs) will be distributed in class; they cannot be posted by anyone other than the College Board.
  • Video: The Power of Words (another type of visual medium to analyze)
  • PPT: Incorporating Source Quotes in Essays (available here as a PDF)
  • ACES Method for essay writing
  • Take the information we’ve learned from Incorporating Quotes and ACES and look at your JFK essay again for opportunities for revision. Post your essay to the Google Docs folders(1 for each class) shared via Remind, and be sure to name your file as “firstname-lastname-aplc1-jfk-essay” (1B) and “firstname-lastname-ap4c1-jfk-essay” (4B). Essays are due Thursday. If you get stuck and can’t upload it to the folder, just share it with my email address: mrussell-ausley@wcpss.net
  • Practice 40-question MC passages (40/44) — things to make note of/pay special attention to:
    • “In context…” (usually a vocabulary word that may have an alternate/unfamiliar meaning)
    • “…can best be described as…”
    • “…most nearly means…”
    • “…all of the following except…”
    • “…primarily appeals to…”
    • “…[paragraph or passage] as a whole…”
  • Things we know we need to work on:
    • sentence structure types (simple, compound, complex, compound-complex)
    • types of sentence (declarative, interrogative, imperative, exclamatory)
    • (rhetorical) modes of composition (narration, description, exposition, argument)
    • tone & diction (how they work together)
    • Rhetorical Devices (PPT)  /  Rhetorical Devices (PDF) (where is my “hmmmmm…” emoji?? love y’all, but it sounds like you need to study…)
    • vocab words (SAT/ACT 50-cent words)
